Thinking Holidays? Think “Closer to Home” Part One

Our beautiful Great Britain.
Caribbean style beaches may be closer than you think….

It’s been a tough time to say the least.

Probably, we all have reacted differently to having to stay at home during the Corona virus epidemic yet these past few months have been hard for us all. No question.

As travel restrictions are gradually easing and while flight details and conditions are yet to be confirmed for places further away, it’s time to take a look at holidays “closer to home”. These are stunning places in our own country including some which bear more than a passing resemblance to European and other farther flung destinations.

Most can be reached by short, domestic flight, by ferry or catamaran (with or without your own car), using your own car, or by train, meaning you feel that if you are in a completely new and different place while, in reality, you’re still within easy reach of your own home.

Take a look…

If you love the white sand beaches of the Caribbean, think about Shell Beach

Shell Beach on the tiny, traffic free island of Herm, just 20 minutes by boat from Guernsey.

An unspoilt, almost two kilometre stretch of white sand, created by crushed ivory-coloured shells brought here by the Gulf Stream. Relax, swim, enjoy local crab sandwiches from the beach kiosk and take the boat excursions for seal and puffin watching.

On your way back to the mainland, stop for a few days in pretty St Peter Port on Guernsey for the superb seafood restaurants, designer boutique shopping, historic sights – even hire a private yacht for the day and explore the coast. If marine body treatments are on your list, choose the five star Old Government House for elegance and some memorable seaweed therapy at the spa.

If you love watching opera in Verona or Rome, think about Belfast in Northern Ireland

The Grand Opera House in the centre of Belfast is an iconic building which opened in 1895. Under total refurbishment during 2020 it is expected to open in late autumn presenting sensitive restoration to the facades, galleries and stonework with additional new facilities for visitors.

The venue offers something for everyone (not just opera) and early 2021 sees the musical “Mamma Mia!” come to the GOH followed by The Nutcracker in February.

Belfast has had something of a style revival in recent years with the addition of the Titanic Experience Museum, the opening of Crumlin Road Gaol to visitors, the chic, contemporary Titanic Hotel and some award winning, new restaurants. The dramatic Antrim Coast (including Game of Throne filming locations) , Giant’s Causeway, the historic town of Derry/Londonderry (and the story of “The Troubles”), Bushmills Distillery are all within an easy drive.

For lovers of golf and spa, add a few nights at the Roe Park Resort, under 75 minutes drive from Belfast which has excellent facilities for both.
