Thinking Holidays? Think “Closer to Home” Part Two

Our beautiful Great Britain.
Caribbean-style beaches may be closer than you think…

It’s been a tough time to say the least.

Probably, we all have reacted differently to having to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic, yet these past few months have been hard for us all. No question.

As travel restrictions are gradually easing and while flight details and conditions are yet to be confirmed for places further away, it’s time to take a look at holidays “closer to home”. These are stunning places in our own country including some which bear more than a passing resemblance to European and other farther flung destinations.

Most can be reached by short, domestic flight, by ferry or catamaran (with or without your own car), using your own car, or by train, meaning you feel that  you are in a completely new and different place while, in reality, you’re still within easy reach of your own home.

In recent years, climate change has resulted in exceptionally warm weather in Great Britain with September and October being milder than usual. Winter months are great for lovers of outdoor activities including walking and hiking or spa and gourmet breaks. Flights and sea transport operate year-round to most destinations mentioned.

Whether you cherish the idea of just three nights away or a longer holiday, perhaps involving multi-centres, then our “closer to home” ideas in beautiful Great Britain will be perfect for you.

Take a look…

If you had planned to look for the Northern Lights (Scandinavia and Iceland will wait for you.)

Think about Scotland’s Orkney and Shetland islands, where the famous aurora borealis are often seen between November and late February. Or venture to Ireland, specifically to Malin Head in County Donegal where they also regularly appear.

In both Scotland and Ireland there’s so much to explore. Scotland has the Cairngorms National Park for fishing, pony trekking, some 30,000 lochs, glens and mountains, the Jacobite steam train and so much more. Ireland has history, monuments, beaches, mountains and some amazing wildlife. In County Galway, Killary harbour is Ireland’s only fjord and home to dolphins and otters.

If you miss the wild Atlantic coast vibe of France and Portugal, Think about Braye Beach on the island of Alderney

A number of places on both France and Portugal’s Atlantic coast have that romantic, wild, windswept feel. Totally unspoilt, hotels here often have superb, open bar-restaurant terraces, heart-stoppingly beautiful views to sea, sand dunes and the sensation that scenes from films like “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” might well have been filmed here.

The four-star, luxurious Braye Beach Hotel fits that description perfectly. Right there on the beach, it has those terraces and those views. You can get from your room or suite to the sand in under two minutes. The hotel has a small, private cinema with a wide selection of movies – available to guests at no extra charge.

Alderney has a maximum speed limit of 35 mph yet not a single traffic light. And if fortresses and bastions hold interest for you, then in addition to the 18 or so built here by the Victorians, the occupying German forces in situ from 1940 built further bunkers and watchtowers. You can travel around part of the island on the charming “toy train”, a carriage formerly serving passengers on the London Underground.

If wildlife watching and the unspoilt island nature of the smaller Greek islands attract you, think about the five islands of the Isles of Scilly

Located off the coast of Cornwall and with fantastic beaches, untouched nature and an abundance of wildlife including nesting seabirds, waders, butterflies, hedgehogs, and seals together with incredible flora and fauna, this is the place to go to capture that indefinable, beautiful “time-warp” feel. St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, Bryher and St Agnes all have their own personality yet share that tranquil serenity evident in the beautiful beaches, coves, and tiny communities. Visiting artists love the place, attracted by that special light. Despite being the setting and filming location of the popular BBC TV series “An Island Parish” (2007-2009), the Isles of Scilly never feel crowded – they retain that dreamy, far-away feel. There are organised coastal walks and wildlife safaris by boat.
